About Buddhism
Buddhism originated in Ancient India during Sramana tradition in late Vedic age between 6th & 4th BCE. Currently, It is the 4th largest religion in the world with 7% of the world population following Buddhism.
Objective or goal of Buddhist traditions and teachings are to overcome from suffering, a cycle of death & rebirth by attainment of Nirvana or through the path of Buddhahood. Gautam Buddha is believed to be an enlightened teacher who has attended the final stage of Buddhahood. Based on his life & discourses, different school of Buddhism had interpreted & summarised path of teaching which is currently in existence in form of 2 major traditions of Buddhism Theravada Buddhism(Oldest) & Mahayana Buddhism. Vajrayana & Zen Buddhism are the other two school of learning, which is initially said to be part of Mahayana Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism widely spread in Srilanka, Thailand & South East Asian countries & Mahayana Buddhism spread in Tibet, Magnolia & East Asian countries. Vajrayana Buddhism is practised in Bhutan. Buddha was born in Lumbini(In Todays Nepal) as Prince Siddhartha of the Kapilavastu Kingdom in Ancient India & he lived there till 29 years of his age before moving to Urvela forest(Todays Bodhgaya) in search of knowledge. He was accompanied by his friends who together with Prince Siddhartha started meditating but his friends could not resist very difficult meditation & sacrifice of food for longer. Siddhartha continued his meditation for 6 years to achieve enlightenment & final stage of Buddhahood to become Gautam Buddha. His first sermon was delivered in Sarnath and he stayed mostly in today's eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar after enlightenment and delivered the sermon at multiple places and visited Rajgir, Vaishali, Kushinagar, Sravasti, Kaushambi & Sarnath.
